REVIEW OF: ELLA ENCHANTED, by Gail Carson Levine

“My gift is obedience.” Those four words, seemingly meaningless words, altered a young girl’s life forever. I just recently finished the novel Ella Enchanted and it is one of the best fantasy books that I have ever read. Ella of Frell, a spirited young lady, was given a terrible gift when she was just a little baby, ignorant of the world around her. Throughout the whole novel you experience and learn about Ella’s challenges being endlessly obedient and her adventures in her homeland called Kyria. Since Ella is so obedient, if she is told to sing, she has to sing or if Ella is told to hurt someone she loves, she would have to do it. Ella has to overcome many hard obstacles, but because her will to live and love is as radiant as ever, she always manages to find a way out. Ella is taught a very valuable lesson in this book, not a lesson you must learn, but a lesson you must find yourself. When Ella is forced to give up someone she loves she has to make a choice, a choice that could change her life forever.
Overall, I thought that Ella Enchanted was an amazing novel with a thrilling story-line. I feel that it had the perfect amount of detail and the characters were fully developed. I really liked the way that the lesson taught in the book was easy to connect to. This book made me have mixed emotions: one minute I was happy, the next I was scared for the characters’ safety. I really enjoyed going on adventures and escaping danger with Ella throughout this novel.
I would recommend this book for ages 7 and up. I think that it is a great fantasy story for girls everywhere.
