Review of: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien – PART 1 (about 150 pages)

Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin are leaving the Shire! Frodo received a magical, but evil, ring for his birthday. This corrupt ring has to be destroyed before Sauron, an evil lord, gets it so he can rule the magical place called Middle-earth. According to Gandalf, Frodo’s wizard friend, it can only be melted in the fires of Mt. Doom. Frodo has to destroy it while hateful shadows try to kill him. He goes from Hobbiton to Buckland, where he picks up his friends Merry and Pippin. They then travel through the Old Forest and end up meeting Tom Bombadil who helps them and gives them a safe place to rest. I am about one third finished with the novel, but I’m starting my review now because it’s so long!
So far, I like the book, but the movie was very different. I particularly like Sam. He knew Frodo didn’t want anyone to go with him, but Sam knew his good friends would share his burden. I didn’t like the way Sam was picked to go with Frodo because the author could have thought of a better way for Sam to be included in the journey. I did think it was funny when they met Tom Bombadil.
People who like fantasy and adventure would like this book. It is full of magical and fantastical creatures. I think it is for 6th graders and up because it is hard to read. It is a good challenge for 6th grade.
