Have you been hunted by a murderer before?  Young rebel Tom Sawyer has.  When he saw a murder and didn’t tell anyone who the killer was, Tom’s life went from a little awful to downright nasty.  Most of the time, Tom is just trying to live a carefree life and get out of work. Before seeing the murder, Tom and his friend get into a lot of trouble and mischief.  But now he is being hunted by the foul killer, Injun Joe.  Then just when you think life can’t get any worse, Tom and the killing monster of a man are trapped in a cave with many tunnels, both trying to find the stolen treasure first.  Will Tom live or will he perish a young and horrible death?

I thought this book was humorous and action packed.  My favorite scene is when he goes to his own funeral to see who would show up.  I didn’t like how Tom was miserable most of the book though. However, at the end, it did seem he learned to be happier with his life and to be content.

I recommend this novel to kids in fifth grade and older.  There is some violence and a lot of odd contractions in the southern language that would be hard for younger kids to understand.
